Pros and Cons
So you like Japanese food, culture, anime, people and you're considering hiring a Japanese au pair? Awesome choice!
But before you dive in, let's take a closer look at what you're signing up for.

Pros
1
Polite
Japanese people are often considered very polite. Japan has many etiquette standards and it would be very unusual to not teach a child how to follow them. Being polite also helps to put forward a good ‘face’ and is considered part of the structure of society.
2
Hard working
Many Japanese people are hardworking and are very committed to their work. This is related to critical values, with a strong sense of duty and obligation and a need to maintain the harmony of doing overtime when everyone else is doing overtime.
3
Punctual
Being late is seen as disrespectful to the other party as if you don’t value their time and work. When attending meetings and appointments in Japan, it is best to arrive early or be on time at the latest. Even casual catch-ups with friends expect a high standard of punctuality.
Cons
Japanese Culture is entirely different. These are my top cons of living with Japanese.

The Language Barrier
We do not speak English in Japan. Au pairs are here to learn and improve English throughout their stay with your family.
Some may be too shy to speak up, embarrassed to make mistakes.

The Social Nuances
Japanese usually being more indirect, less social and less open.
Since Japanese has Non-verbal communication, you may find the Japanese au pairs too shy and too quiet.

Preparation
We have many rules in Japan. Rules are made to keep the order and avoid chaos.
As a result, a well-prepared schedule and house rules must be organized in advance.
But as the old saying goes,
“Nothing good ever came easy.”
The good stuff never comes when things are easy!
By addressing these factors proactively and fostering open communication and understanding, families need to be very specific as to what you need help and be patient.
This effort can create a rewarding and enriching experience for both their children and their Japanese au pair.

SIMPLE KINDNESS and PATIENCE are THE KEY!
Every au pair has unique strengths and abilities. If your au pair isn’t skilled in certain tasks like sushi-making or ironing, consider assigning duties that better align with their strengths.
Remember, they bring their own personalities and talents—let’s embrace their strengths and support their growth together!
Au pair training and Special courses for Au pairs
Your Au pair all do have thorough training before they start as a demi pair/au pair. This includes online training in Japan and a more relaxed session when they arrive at some point in their stay.
They also receive a very thorough training manual.

*Families are responsible for training au pairs on cleaning duties because household expectations and cleaning routines vary greatly between families. Since the approach to housework is so individual, we found that it makes sense to leave it to the families to guide their au pair in those areas.
